Discovering challenges of adolescence through Nora Sanya … as CORA takes BOOKTrek to the hinterland

On Thursday, September 28, 2023, the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA), in collaboration with the Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA), staged CORA's second September BOOKtrek, at the UVA office in Magodo, Shangisha, Lagos, Nigeria.

The Community Literacy Outreach, as the event was themed, engaged Secondary School Students, from Good Vine School and Ejidey School, in an interactive discussion with the author of Dear Mother, Nora Sanya, about her amazing teenage fiction. The first of the author's Loving Daddy series, Dear Mother, is centered around a teenage protagonist, Dayo, who encounters adolescent challenges that occur with friends, family, and school. However, the Dear Mother centres on how this adolescent boy navigates through the uncertainties of life, and his experiences of joy, adventure, pain and grief. At the event, the 24 students, who represented both schools, were all made to read excerpts from each chapter of the book, which they delightfully did. Afterwards, there was an intense question and answer session between the students and the author, Nora Sanya, depicting how invested the students already were in the book.

Nora Sanya listened with rapt attention as she took their questions, exactly how they listened while she summarised the story to them, and answered with utmost thrill. While answering a question on her reason for writing, she said "I am a Property and Entertainment lawyer by profession, and a writer by passion". In her closing remark, Nora Sanya expressed her unwavering gratitude to the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA) and Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA) for providing a platform where she is able to speak to teenagers concerning her book and educate them through physical engagement and interactions. The lawyer asserted that her major aim for writing the series was to reach out to adolescents. Additionally, she stated that the interactive session she had with the students was a dream come true for her.
