Stella Damasus Discusses Màmá, It's a Girl at CORA BOOKTrek

CORA's September Monthly BOOKTrek saw a lively and interactive discussion with the famous actress Stella Damasus over her book, Màmá, It's A Girl. Held at the CORA Library and Resource Centre, Freedom Park, Lagos Island, the BookTrek was held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, with the attendance of Ms Damasus herself. It was organized by Amara, a book publisher at PurpleShelves.

The novella addresses the menace of barbaric customs and traditions and domestic violence against women and girls in Africa. According to the author, the inspiration to write the book was driven by true life stories she was privy to while working as a philanthropist with an organisation that helps women in this situation. The interactive session between the author and the young minds that constitute her audience revealed that the youths are willing to make impacts in the society, no matter how small.

Stella Damasus, who is a renowned actress in the Nollywood industry, wrote the book to discourage female genital mutilation, lack of education and deprivation of the girl-child, domestic violence of women and girls, early marriage, gender inequality, rape, and many other barbaric customs and traditions. Hence, she stressed the need for women and girls to speak up, "Sorosoke", whenever they are faced by any of these societal menaces. She encouraged young and old people, men and women, boys and girls to contribute their quota to curb the menace of discrimination against the girl-child in the society. She said that this contribution could be made through the several social media platforms that are available — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, and others —, by rendering support to victims of the menace, and by supporting Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that render assistance to survivors.

The author said that she had written the book since 2016, but refused to publish it until 2023 due to uncertainty of its reception by audience. She encouraged young creative writers to erase any form of fear in their minds and "Just do it", saying that their own audience will find them and be happy to read their works. She also announced that there is a visuals for the novella on her YouTube Channel https://youtu.be/45ALU1M9nSk?si=sv15YdmTlH4B7DrT Those in attendance for the BOOKTrek include some board members of CORA, creative writers, youths interested in making societal change, CORA Volunteers and inquisitive students of an NGO Foundation.
